01/09/2012 ARRESTS MADE IN TWO BUSINESS BURGLARIES |

Arrests were recently made by the Izard County Sheriff’s Department in connection with burglaries of two Melbourne businesses-the Pop-Up Video Store and the Consignment Shop. The investigation began with a compliant by the video store owner that the business had been entered and that DVD’s and money were taken on December 13th. The value of the DVD’s was estimated at $1,000 and the amount of money taken was $300. During the course of interviewing two suspects admitting to the criminal acts at the video store and further admitted to entering the Consignment Store, which had not been reported to authorities , and taking items including prom dresses , lingerie, and a small amount of cash some two weeks before their involvement with the video store. Anthony K. Mejia, age 24 of Melbourne and Amy Lynn Smith, age of 18 of Melbourne were both charged with two counts of commercial burglary, class “c” felonies; theft of property, a class “d” felony; and theft of property, a class “a” misdemeanor. Sheriff Tate Lawrence said that both Mejia and Smith remain in the Izard County Detention Facility on a $15,000 bond each.
