According to Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence, the National Safety Council estimates that there will be 405 traffic fatalities and 40,500 medically consulted injuries over this traditional end-of-summer holiday. The number one cause of a fatalities is alcohol while the second leading cause is speeding.
The number one rule is don’t drink and drive and always designate a non-drinking driver. Young drivers are at particular risk to alcohol related crashes. All state have a zero tolerance law where drivers under the age of 21 cannot have alcohol in their system.
The best defense against drunk drivers is to wear your seat belt and allow plenty of time for your travel. Drive defensively and exercise extreme caution.
