Detention & Dispatch Center
Lt. Sherry Davidson |
The Izard County Detention Facility and Dispatch Center located at 300 Circle Drive in Melbourne is a state of the art facility built in 2003. The operations of these two entities are under the supervision of Jail and Dispatch. The Izard County Sheriff's Department and the Izard County District Clerk are also located within the facility.
The Detention Center is a long-term lockup facility with a capacity of 34 inmates and four state 309 inmates. The operation has historically received excellent ratings from the State of Arkansas Criminal Detention Facilities Review Board as one of the best-managed facilities in the state. Inmates are separated by male or female and violent or non-violent offenders. Inmates that are arrested are brought to the detention center where they are held until they can post a bond or until they are sentenced. Inmates sentenced to the Arkansas Department of Correction are held at the facility until bedding space is available at the Department of Correction Intake facility.
All Detention Officers are required to complete a 40 hour Jail Standards class to be certified as a jailer. Detention Officers also receive training in dispatch procedures and on the Data master Breathalyzer Machine (BAC). Detention officers are responsible for the security of the inmates and the jail. Act "309" inmates, state inmates assigned to work in county facilities, are responsible for food preparation, laundry, and housekeeping and maintenance duties at the facility.
The Dispatch Center is operational twenty-four hours a day and handles dispatch functions for the Izard County Sheriff's Department, all county Fire Departments, and emergency medical; plus local Arkansas State Police, Arkansas Game and Fish and Arkansas Forestry Officers. Emergency 911 calls and other emergency calls are directed through the Dispatch Center for paging of appropriate personnel. Dispatchers are responsible for paging out weather spotters during severe weather and setting off Tornado Sirens when the county goes under a Tornado Warning.
A grant had been awarded to the Izard county Sheriff's Department for an enhanced wireless 911 system. This system has been operational since October of 2008 at no cost to the Izard County taxpayers.
